Happy Independence Day!

If you’ve been as busy as we have this summer, you probably didn’t realize that this Saturday is Independence Day until you flipped the calendar yesterday. July 4th is one of our favorite holidays – what’s better than a whole day to celebrate America with beer, barbeque, and beautiful fireworks displays? Correct – not much. Now, if you’re not aware, we’re located in Austin, Texas, (and we love every minute of it!) so if you’ll also be spending the holiday weekend in ATX and are still looking for a fun event or some fantastic fireworks, we’ve put together a list of some of the best events going on around town.

Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic: Considering the fact that we’re the live music capitol of the world, it only makes sense that we’d kick this list off with a concert! And not just any concert, we’re talking about the legendary Willie Nelson playing at the Austin 360 Amphitheater. Parking and gates open at 11 AM and the music starts rolling at 11:15 and keeps going till 12:30 AM. It’s not the 4th without some fireworks, so of course there’s a spectacular show at 9:45 pm. So pack a blanket, bring plenty of food and water, slather on the sunscreen, don a hat and hit the Circuit of the Americas this Saturday.

Blue Starlite Independence Day at the Drive In: Looking for something a little out of the ordinary to do this year? Try hitting Austin’s own urban drive-in, Blue Starlite, for a showing of Independence Day (what else?!) and Back to the Future. Drive-ins are a classic piece of American culture, and we’re glad they’re slowly making a comeback! Showings are July 3 & 4 at 9pm – complete with an on-screen fireworks show.

July 4th Symphony and Fireworks: This celebration on Auditorium Shores is an Austin classic. Entry is absolutely free, and the Austin Symphony begins playing at 7:30 pm with the fireworks show starting at 9:30. Locals vendors will be selling food, drink, and crafts as well. We love fireworks over the Austin skyline and Ladybird Lake!

4th of July Parade: Happening pretty much everywhere around Austin: Cedar Park, Leander, Buda, West Lake, and Pflugerville, Round Rock, and Lago Vista all have 4th of July parades and celebrations, so if you’re out in the ‘burbs, worry not. Just check your city’s website for start times.

Honorable mention: We’re not saying this is a great idea but…there’s also a corndog eating contest at the Black Sheep Lodge at 2:30 pm. And honestly, fireworks and freedom aside, eating massive amounts of deep-fried goodness for sport is about as American as it gets. It does cost $20 to enter, but you get a free t-shirt and the chance to win eternal glory (and a $250 cash prize.) Also, all proceeds go to Austin Pets Alive.

We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend – please don’t forget to be safe (no drinking & driving, no shooting fireworks at your friends, etc.) Happy 4th of July!
