Free Outdoor Events in Austin

Congress Bridge Bats
Let’s face it - this was quite the long and brutal winter for us Austinites, and it seemed as if it would never end. Finally, we can enjoy some warmer weather and all the fun activities that come along with spring and summertime in this beloved city. We’re quite excited about the warmer temps, so we thought it fitting to stray from the usual Internet Marketing posts and highlight all the fun, free, outdoor events in Austin. We’re here to outline some of our favorites (some family-friendly, some for adults only to enjoy)!
Congress Bridge Bats
Whether you’re a seasoned Austin veteran or new to the ever-expanding city, everyone enjoys watching bats swarm the congress bridge during summer nights. Thousands come to view the world’s largest urban bat colony (a whopping 1.5 million bats) fly under the bridge over the peaceful Lady Bird Lake. It has become quite the fascinating spectacle in Austin that tourists worldwide come to experience. Make sure to time it just right and come before sunset where, if you’re lucky, you can enjoy up to 45 minutes of bat flocking. Best month to view: August. Bat Conservation International offers more tips and information on the fun activity in Austin.
Comedy Night at Banger’s Sausage House
For those who enjoy a good beer and good laugh, you can’t miss out on Banger’s Comedy Show the first Wednesday of every month. This hilarious event is located in the pet-friendly beer garden that serves up the largest sausage selection in Austin and over 100 beers on tap. You’ll experience some of Austin’s funniest standup comedians from 9-11pm that will have you rolling on the floor laughing. Be advised – there’s no predicting how inappropriate these jokesters get so bring children at your own risk. Follow the Banger’s Comedy Show Facebook for updates and to see who will be performing.
Unplugged at the Grove
Music lovers rejoice! Every Thursday you can enjoy some awesome Austin musicians perform at the award-winning restaurant Shady Grove. This year is KGSR’s 21st anniversary of Unplugged at the Grove. As one of Austin’s longest running free live music series you can expect to hear awesome artists like Bob Schneider, Shakey Graves, and more until September. Live music starts at 8pm, but we advise getting there early to enjoy a beverage, delicious snack, and the comfort of the famous shaded patio. Find a complete list of the lineup at the restaurant’s website.
Blues on the Green
KGSR also hosts Blues on the Green in Zilker Park. The awesome free concert series features some of Austin’s favorite artists. With an impressive 2014 lineup, you can enjoy some quality outside air with the fam. Bring a blanket and some beverages, lawn chairs, pups, all are welcome! You won’t find a more authentic, free Austin experience so we highly recommend checking out at least one of the Wednesdays starting May 28th. You’ll love the friendly neighborhood feel of this great experience.

Friday Night Films in the Park
Movie buffs, there’s a free outdoor event for you as well! Beginning May 16, Alamo Drafthouse in partnership with South Shore District debuts Friday Night Films in the Park. This event takes place at South Shore District, located on the south bank of Lady Bird Lake. Here you can expect different food trailers each week, a fun atmosphere, a beautiful lakeside view, and awesome summertime movies. Sit under the stars and get in touch with your 80’s roots with movie showings like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Dirty Dancing. For event details, click here.
Sunset Yoga on the Plaza
Yogis unite! Blue Honey Yoga will host Yoga on the Plaza at Whole Foods Market on Lamar. This yoga series is meant to promote health and wellness throughout the Austin community. Every Wednesday from 9-10 pm enjoy lessons from some of Austin’s top yoga instructors. No free event is complete without music and food, so expect to find musicians and DJ’s and treats and beverages from local businesses.

With spring in full swing we thought it fitting to stray from the usual Internet Marketing posts and highlight all the fun, free, outdoor events that Austin has to offer!
