Fall Events in Austin

It’s officially fall in Austin, and the cooler temperatures couldn’t have swept through the city soon enough. There’s no doubt we love the summer season in Austin as it’s rife with amazing, free, outdoor activities and events for all ages to enjoy. However, there’s only so many triple-digit temperature days one can handle and luckily, we live in a city where the fun doesn’t stop! Season after season, a different lineup of free (and close to free) events invade the popular, ever-growing Austin terrain. The only difference with fall is that we can enjoy these events comfortably without a layer of sweat forming. Never has it been a better time to take advantage of the prevalent outdoor patios, greenbelt trails, and awesome events!

Free Outdoor Movies

If you enjoyed the free movie viewings that the Long Center put on this summer, you’re in luck! There are a slew of new outdoor movies being presented this fall. Bring blankets, beer, and the whole family to various outdoor movie viewings throughout the months of October and November. Similarly, Austin Parks Foundation in conjunction with the Alamo Drafthouse brings you Movies in the Park every year right at Republic Square Park downtown. Enjoy movies the whole family can watch such as Beetlejuice and The Dark Knight.

Farming with the Fam

Right outside of Austin are beautiful cities that host fun outdoor activities. For an exciting and different way to spend a fall day (away from the noise of Austin), take a trip to Barton Hills Farm in Bastrop or Sweet Berry Farm in Marble Falls. Barton Hills Farm has a great play area with swings, mazes, pirate ships, and other fun activities to keep the children entertained. And parents can enjoy live music while sipping a cold brew and observing. Sweet Berry Farm takes in the fall spirit with pumpkin patches, animals to feed, and a maze as well. Bring a picnic lunch to this farm as well and don’t forget your camera!

Music Festivals

You can’t discuss fall in Austin without mentioning Austin City Limits and Fun Fun Fun Fest. Though not free, these two festivals are well worth ticket prices. They entice tens of thousands worldwide to come, with acts from some of the most influential, coveted performers. This year, ACL is happening October 3-5 as well as October 10-12 with headlining performers such as Lorde, Pearl Jam, Outkast, Lana del Ray, and so many more! Pack your sunscreen and stay hydrated because this crazy weekend is sure to impress! Fun Fun Fun Fest goes on November 7-9 when temperatures are a bit cooler. This independent festival features Girl Talk, Neutral Milk Hotel, Wiz Khalifa, and plenty more including comedians, sports professionals, and mouth-watering food. If possible, we recommend attending at least one of these epic fall festivals!

Halloween Festivities

Austinites take Halloween to a whole other level. After all, our city's slogan is “Keep Austin Weird” so what better way and time than during the frightfully elaborate and crazy holiday. Luckily, there are tons of creepy things set up around town to scare just about any veteran Halloween-obsessed Austinite. Some of our top choices include:

  • Symphony of Terror – The Austin Symphony presents music from all our favorite horror movies on October 24.
  • Boo at the Zoo – Beginning October 10, see the animals at night at the Austin Zoo.
  • Dia de los Muertos Festival – On October 25, don’t miss this amazing festival with tons of cultural music, food, and fun activities.
  • House of Torment – For a more thrilling experience, visit the House of Torment at the Highland Mall. We’re not kidding, it’ll chill your bones.

There’s never a shortage of things to do in Austin, and fall is no different! Whenever you have the free time, check out some of these awesome activities and events – we guarantee they won’t disappoint.
