Myth 2: Gather as Many Inbound Links as Possible

2014 started off with many believing link building was actually a dead practice. After Matt Cutts proclaimed that guest blogging was dead due to the ridiculous amounts of spammy, unnatural links it produced, many did away with link building altogether, finding it too risky. That myth was quickly debunked; however, because we know link earning is a vital component to SEO. In fact, people began thinking just the opposite – the more links, the better. Many believe that having a valid social media presence with content that is actively shared and a brand that is mentioned often will help increase search rankings. Unfortunately, this is not the case yet. Having a Google+ can help your site get indexed faster, but it will not actually change your ranking position. That is not to say you should do away with your social media efforts as they are highly effective for sharing content, interacting with your niche, and establishing your brand.

Myth 5: Google Will Penalize for Duplicate Content

“Duplicate content” is a term that SEO experts toss around often. Duplicate content refers to more than one page having the same exact content. It’s a common misconception that Google penalizes for duplicate content or that you may even be blacklisted because of it. This is not the case. If you are a legitimate website and the duplicate content that you have is not intended to “be deceptive and manipulate search engine results,” then you’re in the clear. As long as you are not trying to take content illegally from other sites, duplicate content shouldn’t affect your rankings.

Myth 6: You Will See Results Fast

SEO takes time, effort, and patience. It is not a short-term solution that will miraculously save a business within a month. It is a long-term strategy and takes at least six months to even start to see results. However, if you’re consistent with it and actually invest in it, you will see profitable long-term results. Don’t get frustrated if things fluctuate within the first couple months – SEO takes time.
